Number of people employed in the health insurance industry?

Approximately 300,000 people are employed in the health insurance industry (Fox News 10-22-09). Many are lower paid clerical and claims processors, though there are many high paid data processing employees. Most of these people would be needed to process claims even if a public option was in place. Medicare claims are processed by private companies lite BC/BS, Aetna, etc on government contracts. The government is presently capable of processing any medical claims.

oh, millions. Every doctor's office even has someone who's sole job it is to bill the insurance company.

Healthcare is 18% of our GNP - not counting insurance people - so the number is HUGE.
