Receiving checks as a gift: what is the highest amount?

I am receiving a check as a gift and will use it to pay off student loans. What is the highest amount it can go? I understand that there is something wrong at $10,000 or more? Or is that something completely different?

And you are worried because?

Look it's a gift. Photocopy the check before you cash it. As recipient it's not taxable to you. Any gift tax reporting issues are the givers, not yours.

Banks have to report any transactions that are more than $9,999.99.
Either deposits or withdrawls.
